Then check the details.
The outside dimensions of a window do not tell you how much usable escape space it provides. The sash, operating style and hardware can change the clear opening.
For a rectangular opening, width × height ÷ 144 gives square feet when you measure in inches. Area is just one check: minimum width and height, sill height, the well and applicable local requirements still matter.

Do I need a permit for an egress window in Kansas City?
The answer depends on the property’s jurisdiction and the work. A new or enlarged foundation opening and a basement-bedroom conversion require different review from some replacement projects. How big does the window need to be?
Start with the usable opening when the window is operated normally—not the frame or glass size. Local rules can consider opening area, minimum width and height, sill height, and the exterior escape space separately. The model and hardware matter. How much does an egress window cost?
